Visual Arts

About the Visual Arts Program at Fine Arts:
All courses have new projects each session. Materials fees are included in the class tuition unless indicated otherwise. Cover-up smocks are provided for preschool art classes.

Ceramics projects are varied by age and interests. Students create all projects from clay. They are then glazed and fired onsite at The Fine Arts Association. Project examples include: trinket boxes, animals, plates, cups, frames, coil pots, piggy banks, baskets, tiles, beads and more!

Ceramics - Fantastic Animals (ages 5*-8)
Using the basic hand-building techniques, students celebrate animals. Projects may include animal track plates, dinosaurs and their pick of their favorite animal creation. Clay fee is included in tuition.

Drawing for Kids I (ages 6-8)
Do you love to draw? During this introductory drawing class, you’ll learn drawing technique as you work with still life, photographs and the great outdoors. Planning, position, proportion, and line and shading techniques are also taught. Multiple media such as pencil, pastels and more are explored.

Ceramics - Hands On Clay I (ages 6-9) Choose one session.
Using basic hand building techniques, students explore functional and sculptural forms as they create pots from coils and pinch pots and more. Emphasis is placed on creativity. Clay fee is included in tuition.

Creative Painting & Drawing for Kids (ages 6-9) New art concepts and projects each session!
This class is a perfect addition to any school curriculum or simply a great class for a creative kid! Children learn the basics of drawing and painting as they work in multiple mediums - pastels, charcoal, tempera paint, watercolors and more. Observation and imagination skills are used as students develop their creative and technical skills.

Comic Book Creation! (ages 8-12)
Create your own comic book this summer! Students work from concept to final product, learning how to create their own characters and settings and understanding how these components work together with size, proportion, props and body language to produce a variety of personalities. Students receive a bound copy of their own comic book at the end of class.

Ceramics – Hands On Clay II (ages 9-12) Choose one session.

Sticks, stones and other natural elements found by the seashore are used to create really cool art! A multitude of mediums will be used.

Cartooning for Kids (ages 9-13)
Come learn how shapes can create an original cartoon character. Students learn how to draw expressions and basic body positions. Students also experiment using various media with movement, animals, comic strips and even the art of caricature.

Want to take a spin on a pottery wheel? If you have previous experience in ceramics, you will love this class which provides the opportunity for you to create a multitude of artworks on the wheel. (Clay fee is included in tuition.)

Teen & Adult Classes

In some classes students are expected to purchase their own tools and supplies. There is a clay fee of $10 per bag for all ceramics classes listed in this section unless it is indicated that it is included in the class fee. Ceramic tools are also available for $12 per kit. Please inquire about purchasing supplies at the Customer Service Center. Unless indicated, most courses are designed to permit students to continue from previous sessions. New students are always welcome!

Please note that only ceramic projects completed onsite, during class, at The Fine Arts Association, will be fired using Fine Arts equipment.

Graphic Novel Design (ages 12-18)
In this class you’ll learn about the key elements of graphic novels and then create your own characters and develop their stories using various mediums to complete your own graphic novel.

Teen Clay Studio (ages 13-18)
Students pursue individual direction in clay using the basic techniques of hand-building, wheel-throwing and glaze application. Instructor assists students with reaching their goals.

Acrylic Painting for Teens (ages 13 & up) No previous experience required!
Acrylic painting is an accessible medium for the artist-to-be! During this novice class, you learn how to mix colors, use your brushes, explore different surfaces to pain and create your own works of art! Some materials provided. The instructor may request additional supplies which will be communicated at the first class.

Creative Drawing & Painting - Summer Sunsets (adults and teens 16 years & up)
Come connect with others this summer and find inspiration with the summer sunsets. During this six week studio session, Kathy Mercer will guide you in taking your vision to reality as you work in pastels, watercolors or the medium of your choice! Most supplies are included. Private Visual Art Instruction

Private instruction in visual art is available. Visual Art classes at The Fine Arts Association are designed to provide students with a balanced and progressive instruction in all art media. Individual instruction should be viewed as a supplement to regular art classes, not as a substitute.
